MANILA, Philippines - At a fashion show at the Avalon in Hollywood, models appeared in garb that wouldn’t look out of place in a Katy Perry video. This is due partly to the fact that the designer headlining the show is Dubai-based Pinoy designer Furne One, who regularly churns out looks for Perry, most recently her MTV awards dress with glittery broken records. Mainly: the costumes are glittery, and sexy glittery garb has lately been the province of performers like Perry, who enjoy stage ensembles that can be seen by fans a mile away. Forget the jumbo tron behind them broadcasting their every move. If it doesn’t shine like an Exxon oil spill, it’s not worth wearing.
But at his Hollywood showing, which opened alongside the 3D Film Festival, One toned down the shine, settling for iridescence and opalescence instead of his usual razzle dazzle.
Working along the theme of fire and ice, One debuted hyper-glamourous clothes that wouldn’t look out of place at a Victoria’s Secret show (which, incidentally, Perry performed at).
“The white dresses reflect ice with blue degrade at the bottom and the finale dress is fire, which we see sometimes gives different shades of color,” One tells YStyle. “The reflections, angles and dimensions of the dresses are shown in areas which would display the beauty of my creations.”
Strapless, form-fitting and embellished with diamanté over sheer material like silk tulle or acrylic layer cuts and French lace mixed with Swarovski crystals, those dresses demanded an audience. And a certain body type. Instead of stick thin figures, models came busty (many with the help of a scalpel) with some booty to match. It was strictly LA. Even the crowd was totally scene-y. “The show was a success,” he says, “VIP guests like Emily Vancamp (who stars in the recently-debuted Revenge, a soapy spin on The Count of Monte Cristo), Jay Emanuel of America’s Next Top Model and Perez Hilton, the famous hollywood celebrity blogger, were there.”
