How to whip up a cardigan in five minutes (and, no, buying one doesn't count)

MANILA, Philippines - Now that the weather’s turned slightly chilly — with a hiccup of sunny weather interspersed with regular downpours — it’s time to turn our attention to our favorite outerwear. While anoraks prove to be most helpful during the rainy season, especially when you’ve failed to tote your trusty brolly in your old nylon Prada tote, they hardly have the same warm comforting feel as a comfy cardigan — especially if class, or work, happens to be in a room air-conditioned to artic-like levels.

YStyle, thanks to designer Ziggy Savella, has put together a great DIY project to help you remake that musty old sweater of Dad’s into a chic new cardi.

Materials:

Old sweater

Bias tape (available at craft stores) or ribbon

Needle and thread

Button

Scissors

Step 1

Cut along the center front of the sweater.

Step 2

Cut off the turtle neck. Or open up the neckline if the collar cuts high.

Step 3

Sew in the bias tape (or ribbon) along the cut areas to cover the raw edges.

Step 4

Try on the cardigan, mark the part where you want the button to be placed (preferably just above the navel) and attach button.

Step 5

Snip button hole then stitch around it.

The finished product

Chill spot: The can-do cardi looks pricey and preppy.
