From Kathniel breaking the Internet to Zooey Deschanel’s comeback, we cherry-pick pop culture’s best and buzziest this week.
Kathniel makes a ‘Pangako’
MANILA, Philippines - Kathniel fans had a collective seizure this week, as news hit that Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla are reprising the roles of Yna and Angelo in the remake of the blockbuster soap Pangako Sa ‘Yo next year. The love team are portraying characters made famous by Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa over a decade ago. The teaser trailer was released this week to heady Internet buzz. Talk about #BREAKTHEINTERNET.
Star Wars
In other trailer news, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens debuted online. Picking up 30 years after Return of the Jedi, VII is bringing back the iconic threesome—Harrison “Han Solo” Ford, Carrie “Princess Leia” Fisher, and Mark “Luke Skywalker” Hamill. The film is out December 2015 but we can hardly wait.
She&him
Something happened between 500 Days of Summer and New Girl. Zooey Deschanel crossed the line from adorably twee to cloyingly so and suddenly, the bangs for days and the saucer eyes you could disappear into seemed a bit annoying, even a bit disingenuous. Maybe it was New Girl’s first season turning out to be less than perfect. Maybe it was the second and third She & Him albums turning out to be disappointments, at least in light of the great debut. (Maybe it was because she broke Ben Gibbard’s heart… Or did he break hers? We were never really sure.) Still, Zooey seems to have bounced back with aplomb. New Girl has proven a durable comedy series and now She & Him is building good buzz with its new album “Classics,” a collection of covers that dips its toes everywhere from Unchained Melody to Teach Me Tonight. Sometimes, you need to go back in order to move forward.
