MANILA, Philippines - The old nine-story Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate has been transformed into both a home for artists and designers to pursue their creative work and an art and cultural hub for the community. In addition to studio spaces for artists and art groups, the Jockey Club Creative Arts Center (JCCAC) will feature a black-box theater, art galleries, and communal studios or workshops, which are open for booking by resident artists and art communities. It also has shops like G.O.D (Gods of Desire), which has everything from Mao shirts to White Pig toilet paper to Chinese dictionaries that turn out to be boxes of condoms. This shop is all about pumping irony. Residency at the Jockey Club is so in demand that it has around 200-plus artists on the waiting list, according to (JCCAC) development coordinator Kelly Kwan.
