‘Lifestyle Asia’s’ ball for a cause

The lights turned up at the Sierra Madre Ballroom of Fort Ilocandia to welcome guests and prominent families of Ilocos to the Gameng Museo Ilocos Norte benefit dinner organized by Lifestyle Asia magazine. Distinguished guests poured in the lobby garbed in lavish Abel Iloco as they made their way through the Spanish-Moroccan-inspired halls decked with flowers and glistening chandeliers. Duhat wine and Ilocano cornicks were served while guests were being welcomed by friends of the museum. Tables were beautifully adorned with a centerpiece of bamboo on mountain rice with an atang cup on top.

Museo Ilocos Norte head Araceli Drake opened the festivities and Ilocos Norte Governor Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed guests with a short speech underscoring the essence of the evening’s celebration. "Think that you are not only having a rather fancy dinner but also that you are helping us celebrate the traditions, the culture and the history of Ilocos Norte," he said.

Ana Ventura Remigio

How would you encourage the public to value our historical monuments?

Through information dissemination. Start with grade school until college. It’s important to know our own heritage.

Albert Chua

Where would you bring a foreign guest to show off our local culture?

Well, we’re in Ilocos Norte so I should be bringing them to historic places here like the Paoay Church, Pagudpod beach and the Bell Tower of Laoag.

Mitzie de los Santos

What historic event you have witnessed will you share proudly with your children?

Maybe the invitation I got to this event. This is the only formal gathering where Ilocanos can come together.

Norman Rabago

What event in local history means the most to you as a Filipino?

EDSA I that started People Power. And I think, looking back now, it’s relevant to give our support to whoever is running the government for the betterment of the people and the country.

Antonio de los Santos

Do Filipinos learn from our mistakes in history?

No, and I think we should so that we don’t keep repeating the same mistakes.

Arlene de Guzman

How can you contribute to preserving our heritage sites?

Being in the hotel business, we bring our tourists to these places so that they can appreciate it. By doing so, we encouraged them to give a donation that can be added to the money that’s being used in preserving it.

Lilibeth Rabago

Which Filipino values towards the elderly should we proudly sustain in our everyday lives?

Respect which we show our elders. It’s no longer modern to say "Mano po" to the elderly.

Marylin Luis

How can you help the government in promoting our tourist heritage sites?

Through my own simple way of promoting our beautiful spots particularly in Pagudpod to our friends in Manila, especially to our business partners and friends.

Dinky Co

Which Filipino characteristic should the world value?

The gesture of mano. Because nowadays most kids seldom show respect to their parents.

Mary Ann Yasay

What would you discuss with Jose Rizal over a glass of champagne?

As an opthalmologist, I would ask him how he became a good opthalmologist, and at the same time how he managed to fight for his principles and beliefs.
