MANILA, Philippines - An international team of spelunkers, with the support of the provincial government through its tourism office, conducted recently a week-long expedition of caves in Balbalan town in Kalinga.
Twelve cavers from Brazil, Germany, Lebanon and the United States and five members of the Balincaguin Conservancy of Pangasinan and Sierra Madre Outdoor Club, Inc. of Cagayan went to Balbalan to explore the Tawang and Gawaan Caves, and the underground river at Maling.
The group composed of natural science experts and environmentalists explored, mapped and documented the two sites. Results that include animal inventory and insect habitat study will be turned over to the provincial government as input for its plan to develop and promote these tourist spots.
The expedition team also conducted awareness campaign with village folks on environment preservation; orientation on cultural, social and economic benefits from the development of natural wonders, and introductory training for local guides.
