Have a geekgasm at Summer Komikon

MANILA, Philippines - Comic geeks (we mean this in the new cool way) are gathering today for one momentous occasion in fandom for Summer Komikon 2013. The biannual comics convention will feature the best in local comics and Filipino artists and creators. Special guests for the events will be Jomike Tejido (Foldabots and Mikrokosmos), Robert Magnuson (Shirley’s Pets), and Elbert Or (Bakemono High and Lola: A Ghost Story). As always, this summer’s Komikon will have its Komiks Tiangge, where upcoming independent comics will be sold. Other activities will include contests such as the Comic Creation and the Character Making, talks by artists from Singapore, book-signings, and meet-and-greets with local talents flourishing abroad. Geekgasm will take place at the Bayanihan Center, Pioneer, Pasig.

Fall in love with â€˜Sa Wakas’

Sa wakas. Finally. The Pinoy rock musical based on Sugarfree songs will officially premiere today. Sugarfree is behind the heart-wrenching hits Mariposa and Hari Ng Sablay, which for a time proved to be the anthem for heartbroken teens everywhere. Expect the same bittersweet treatment in Sa Wakas, which will touch on why relationships fall apart and how choices define us. The story will focus on the end of a relationship and the start of another, so be prepared to cry your heart out while singing ‘Wag Ka Nang Umiyak. Sugarfree may have disbanded, but their memories live on forever, as well as the feelings we felt while listening. We’re sure this musical will live on, too. Sa Wakas will stage 14 shows until April 28 at the PETA-Phinma Theater, Quezon City. Check their Facebook page for more details.`

Buy crafts at 10A Alabama

Arts and crafts are often relegated to young children, but adults are joining the fun and creating beautiful pieces that deserve to be displayed or loved. And if said items were bought at the 10A Alabama Handmade Arts and Crafts Fair, you know you have a masterpiece on your hands. The fair promotes handmade craft items made by Filipino artists that vary from gorgeous furniture to notebooks, prints, accessories, and everything else a creative could produce. Daphne Oseña-Paez described the fair as “Etsy heaven. I’m thinking Malugay, Cubao X, and Williamsburg. Very hipster.” The fair usually happens three times a year, so catch it this weekend at 10A Alabama, Quezon City, near E. Rodriguez.

Revolutionize theater with Sipat Lawin

There’s a revolution starting, and even the theater world is affected. Enter Sipat Lawin, whose offspring Battalia Royale shaped the way modern theater is run. They made Battalia Royale interactive by involving the audience, keeping them literally on their toes as the actors led them through pocket stages around the CCP driveway and an abandoned school in Cubao. Today, the group is holding a talk exchange slash meryenda to discuss independent theater, where it’s headed and how we can participate. The talks will also center on crowd-funding theater and the blank ticket concept (intriguing).  Local theater will never be the same again. Join the revolution at 3 p.m. at the Pugad Lawin Studio, Ermin Garcia Avenue, Pinagkaisahan, Cubao. Bring meryenda to share!
