MANILA, Philippines - Media is full of overrated people. Anybody who’s worked in a lifestyle section knows what it’s like to have to keep publishing the photos of and hyping the same 10 society A-listers over and over again. Social media is no different. There’s a lot that needs to be explained, like why people with absolutely no personality can gain more than 400,000 followers just by tweeting clichéd positive quotes. And also, why there are a number of truly interesting, funny, and smart tweeters out there who we think deserve so much more than the measly four digits (or less) that they’re getting.

Here are a few Twitter accounts which we positively suggest you should look into, and those that really just have us scratching our heads.

Underrated

@MosquitoPress

News of the latest political developments in the country often feel like a f*cking joke. @MosquitoPress pokes fun at depressing situations in current events by coming up with hilariously exaggerated spins on the news. It may not actually help, but at least we get to make lemonade out of our lemons.

“BREAKING NEWS: Sotto appointed Secretary of Department of Tweets”

“Offensive tweets are censored, libelous tweets are forwarded to the NBI for criminal investigation, and posts with child pornography are sent to the CBCP.”

@khaela

We’re not really sure what Khaela de Leon does. Her private Facebook profile has the description: “Why are you stalking me?” And she has a fanpage that says she starred in one of Ramon Bautista’s Tales from the Friend Zone episodes on YouTube. We gotta say the woman really cuts! You better not cross her lest she shoots you with a sarcastic joke/comment that will catch you off-guard and have you scrambling to your feet. As for the rest of us, we enjoy laughing at the expense of whoever is inspiring her to be such a smart bitch at the moment.

“If you’re pooping in a public bathroom, don’t wait for everyone to leave before you get out of the stall. Some of us would love to meet you!”

@iamchrislao

You have to give this guy credit. Not everyone manages to emerge from a wave of social media hate and mockery a better person. Christopher Lao has long accepted that he made an ass of himself on national TV and has decided to simply laugh at himself for it. He even brands himself with his “I should have been informed” wallpaper and DP. We also noticed that he no longer misses a beat these days as he constantly retweets news updates about the weather and flood management projects.

“May pakain pala sa office dahil bday ng isang partner...nagdala pa ako ng mang inasal! #uninformed

Overrated

@HecklerForever

We loved his blog, which we featured in a recent article about Internet trolls. We’re not quite sure why his satiric humor doesn’t translate to his Twitter account, though. It’s just not that funny most of the time. Some followers have also complained about his consecutive tweets about the LA Lakers. While he’s a self-confessed fan, not all of his over 44,000 followers appreciate the spam of updates.

“Good night tweeties, ooops, that’s Sharon Cuneta’s. Sorry. GOOD NIGHT! :))”

@MatamaanKa

Quote accounts are the modern version of the ones we used to pass on and on through text. This tweeter dwells on the kill-yourself-emo side of love, which apparently more than 89,000 people are into. Yeah, it’s good to be honest about your emotions. This account, though, has us wanting to slap the author silly until he/she develops some spine. Besides, we know that you don’t really need that much help when it comes to embarrassing yourself online and making your followers feel awkward for you.

“Maybe one day I’ll be good enough.”

@iwtfbro

We’re guessing this account was inspired by the famous @TanginaBro. More than 15,000 followers and counting have bought into it. But we say that if you can’t beat the original, don’t even bother trying. It just doesn’t have that wit and lutong that everybody’s favorite keeping-it-real bro on Twitter is known for. Mostly all this tweeter does is rant, which we’re already pretty good at doing by ourselves. Most of the tweets aren’t even original. Also, what’s with the all caps?

“Ayoko nung kinukumpara ako sa iba! pwede ba?? T*ng ina ha!”
