MANILA, Philippines - Flipping through this month’s issues, it’s hard not to notice Gap’s multi-faceted denim campaign. With the trend being denim on denim, the original workman’s fabric has come full circle — 40 years full circle in fact, as Gap was born in the year 1969.
But instead of partying like it’s 1969, they decided to mark their 40th by throwing back the question to you. So fill in the blanks: I was born to (blank), and you get the “Me” generation voluntarily filling in the words. That’s what happened at the Gap store on Bonifacio High Street the other day when VIPs and media, proving that they do mind the “gap”, came together and showed each other what they were born for. They were born to fit.
Born to save the animals, born to shop and sleep, born to inspire, born to express, born to be numero uno, born to f__ — you name it, they said it.
I have the not-so-bragging rights to be the last guest in that event, and I am thankful for Divine Lee who patiently waited for me to arrive. Upon arrival, we had a snapshot with me proclaiming, “I was born to be here,” and Divine holding up a sign that said, “Born to wait for Tim.” I then rushed to the dressing room to try on the best fitting pair of Gap denims I have ever tried on in my life — I love it! And so another round of photo shooting with Supreme’s favorite snapper Ramon Mangila and I changed my inscription to “Born to change.” You see, what you’re born to do can change as often as you change your pair of jeans.
Born To Be Fit and Fab
“The much-loved brand has worked lengths in redesigning its signature 1969 Premium Jeans pieces. Today, the latest collection boasts details that circle on even the tiniest details — from design and fit to fabric, fasteners and production.” The brand peeps got it right, and you’ll feel it when you try a pair on.
I took longer than usual (?!) in the dressing room because I made sure to try on all the fits: Always Skinny, Real Straight, Sexy Boot and Curvy for women (it fits well on men, too!); and Straight, Authentic, Standard, Boot, Loose and Easy for men. After going through their press release, I realize Gap is moving along with the times — they are both eco and tech-friendly, making sure that the water they use for dyeing is treated to guarantee the cleanliness and safety of nearby communities. They also have a Facebook fan page where you (I know you’re a fan) share what on earth were you born for.
GAP’s Born To campaign also features the likes of young Harvard drop-out and the “No. 1 CEO Under 30” titleholder Tom Szaky who was born to inspire; Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright, actor, singer, and songwriter Elisa Davis who was born to do it all; stage and screen actor for The Lake House and John Adams Ebon Moss-Bachrach who was born to be curious; HBO’s Tell Me You Love Me and ABC’s Flash Forward star Sonya Walger who was born to feel; and American actor famous for Best Laid Plans and Jurassic Park III Alessandro Nivola who was born to take risks. Galing!
With all this and more, we throw it back at you, our dear Supreme reader. What were you born to do?
