Right hair, right now

We all have different hair and we all have different feelings toward it.

Some of us are naturally blessed and can use any color, perm or bleach, while some of us, like myself, have to be careful and move mountains to achieve a good hair day.

I generally try to avoid supermarket-variety shampoos and conditioners because I have thin, treated hair.

Luckily, we now have better choices from the emergence of health shops and specialty stores like Rustan’s Essenses that carry a good range of beneficial hair products.

Here’s a selection of recommendations for your special hair needs.

For shiny hair…

L’Occitane from France suggests Olive Daily Shampoo and Conditioner, using natural ingredients, like essential oils extracted from local plants. Olive is known for moisturizing, nourishing and antioxidant properties that provide shine and radiance to hair. Its citrus, cedar aroma is liked by both men and women. And the light conditioner nourishes without weighing down, keeping hair soft and shiny.

For thin hair….

L’Occitane’s Aromachologie Normal and Fine Hair Shampoo and Conditioner promises to add volume to fine, limp, lifeless hair, by a blending of pure and natural Artemisia, petit grain and sweet orange essential oils.

Stimulating, regenerating and revitalizing, this vegetable complex stabilizes the scalp, while the conditioner gives hair a tangle-free finish.

For dry/damaged hair and carcinogen-free products…

Organic Pharmacy recommends Rose Conditioning Shampoo and Rose Intensive Conditioner (P2,950/set).

Hair is nourished and hydrated lightly by an infusion of rose hips, aloe and the herbal complex of arnica, horsetail, coltsfoot, sage and chamomile.

Rose and green tea protect hair from everyday pollution, while, honey, rose hip and shea butter condition and repair dry, damaged hair without the heaviness.

What’s more, Organic Pharmacy is one of the few brands that are truly 100 percent organic, made by a team of passionate homeopaths and beauty therapists who specialize only in herbs, homeopathy and organic skin care.

Formulated by a British pharmacist who wanted to create carcinogen-free products, Organic Pharmacy uses no artificial preservatives, pesticides or herbal residues, no mineral oils or petrochemical derivatives, no solvents, animal testing or ingredients, no artifical colors or fragrances, no harsh detergents, no DEA, Tea or PEG derivatives.

If you’re stressed…

You might want to try a shampoo and conditioner based on a soothing, mellowing ingredient.

TACT from Greece creates a Lavande Shampoo and conditioner (P495 each) based on lavender, one of nature’s most aromatic plants known for its calming and nourishing properties. They say its fresh scent can mellow and remove emotional conflicts.

For colored hair…

Award-winning hairstylist Lee Stafford creates Colour Love shampoo and conditioner (P345 each) to nourish while giving longer life to colored hair.

For a deep gloss…

Lee Stafford’s Shine Head Light Serum Spray (P345) leaves hair shiny and smooth without weighing it down.

Just spray moderately onto towel-dried hair, but avoid the roots. Style as usual. Comes in a convenient handbag-sized spray bottle for those on the go.

For a cool finish…

Lee Stafford’s All Shagged Out (P345) is a super-light revolutionary powder wax that gives texture and style to hair without the gunky feeling.

Scoop a small amount into palms and massage together.

Without looking in the mirror, vigorously work through the whole of your hair, then look in mirror and fringe into place.

Finish with Hold Tight (P345), a firm-hold hairspray with a hold that lasts without stiffening hair.
