Clad in exquisite Filipiniana attire, cultural icons, art patrons, and leaders in politics and business flocked to Resorts World Manila for the gala night and premier of Noli Me Tangere: The Opera. The three-week run of the historic opera, last presented in full orchestra 27 years ago, was enthusiastically supported by students, professionals, and philanthropists to fill the over 1,400 seats at the world-class Vestibule Theater.
Spearheaded by Filipino-American businesswoman and philanthropist Loida Nicolas-Lewis, the Manila opera was produced by JS Productions Inc.’s Jerry Sibal and Edwin Josue. It had successful runs in New York City and Washington D.C. last year before it was brought home to the Philippines last September. The all-Tagalog opera had English supertitles provided above the stage and on the LED screens.
Two of the country’s top opera divas, Irma Potenciano and Fides Cuyugan- Asensio, were honored with Lifetime Achievement Recognition for their life’s work, not only as outstanding performers, but also as well-respected mentors to the current generation of outstanding artists.
Directed by multi-awarded Freddie Santos, and line produced by Mark and Christine Manalang of Ultimate Shows, Noli Me Tangere: The Opera starred an ensemble of world-class Filipino performers including Sal Malaki (Crisostomo Ibarra), Rachelle Gerodias (Maria Clara), Andrew Fernando (Padre Damaso), and Antoni Mendezona (Sisa). The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Maestro Rodel Colmenar, lent its musical prowess to the production.
