‘Noli’ in New York

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Foundation for Filipino Artists, Inc., the Filipino-American community in New York brought the Filipino classic Noli Me Tangere to the New York City stage with a successful three-day run at The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College.  The play, based on our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal’s 1887 classic novel of the same name, became the first Tagalog opera in NYC. The show first opened in Chicago in June 2012. Filipino-American businesswoman and “100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the World” awardee Loida Nicolas-Lewis, who watched one of the Chicago performances, was so impressed she decided to bring the show to New York. The opera is the brainchild of Philippine National Artists Felipe Padilla de Leon, who composed the score, and Guillermo Tolentino, who penned the lyrics, and is considered the finest work from both virtuosos.  Noli Me Tangere, the opera, is set to be staged in Resorts World Manila this September!
