Who is the Italian architect best known for his work in the field of light design with Luceplan and works like the 265 lamp collection and the Berenice filigree table lamps?

MANILA, Philippines - He was born in Milan in 1941 and completed his studies in architecture at the Milan Polytechnic in 1965.

After working for Arteluce, he opened his own studio in 1968 and worked on architectural projects like a day nursery in Segrate (1972), a detached home in Formentera (1972), a residential neighborhood in Feltre (1972), a suburban villa in Bologna (1976), semi-detached homes in Milan (1985) and a retirement home in Novara (1986).

He, however, broadened his experience in the field of lighting design and in1978 founded Luceplan with Riccardo Sarfatti.  Works like the 265 lamp collection, the Berenice filigree table lamps in glass, aluminum, and plastic; and the Titania hanging lamps, reminiscent of floating submarines brought him fame and recognition.

This multi-talented designer also gained success with furniture like the Dakota chair and the Donald System Bookcase, and has designed for Arteluce, Artemide, Luceplan, Alias, Cassina, Nemo, Molteni, Knoll, Kartell, Philips, Montina, Thonet, and Guzzini.

It has been said that, “in his studio he works as a freelancer in the field of architecture, design, and interior design and continues to develop his experience as an interior lighting designer.”

Over the years he has obtained many of the most important national and international awards for design:  three Compasso d’oro awards; the Lamp d’Argent Sil in Paris, 1990; Design Plus Ambient in Frankfurt, 1992; Product Award Lighting Fair in New York, 1992; the RedDot Award at Design Innovation ‘94 in Essen; the ECDP in Amsterdam, 1994.

He has shared his design knowledge with students at the University of Pescara, the Columbia University in New York, the Politecnico in Milan, and the Washington University in St. Louis.

His creations are part of the permanent collections of museums like the Wave Hill Museum Center for Environmental Studies, the MoMa in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan.
