MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines Home Economics Alumni Association (UPHEAA) is hosting a whole-day affair to celebrate the golden anniversary of the UP College of Home Economics (UPCHE). The event, dubbed “Damayan! Streaming the UPCHE Alumni,” will be held on Sept. 28 at the Philippine Trade and Training Center in Pasay City with seminar-workshops from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., cocktails at 7 p.m. and a gala fashion show at 8:30 p.m.
“UPHEAA reinforces its commitment to the Millennium Development Goals for Global Competitiveness in services, products, skills and talents,” said Dr. Evelina G. Escudero, UPHEAA president. “We want to feature our alumni by staging a series of activities showcasing their many talents in the field of home economics and beyond.”
UPCHE alumni professionals from different fields of expertise will facilitate the seminars, workshops and lectures. Topics include “Family Entrepreneurship: Start Your Own Business” by Dr. Eleanor Malicdem; “Instructional and Toy Production” by Dr. Evalyn Hizon; “Home Care Products” by Lourdes Rivera; and “Handicraft and Fashion Accessories” by Kristyn Caragay.
“All lecturers, except Lourdes Rivera, are faculty members of the UP College of Home Economics,” added Escudero. “She was honored this year by the UP Alumni Association for Women Empowerment.”
Home economics teachers from both private and public schools are invited to attend the lectures to learn new trends in teaching home economics at the elementary and high school levels.
The highlight of the day’s festivities will be a benefit gala fashion show for UPHEAA’s scholarship fund. The show will feature collections from accomplished UPCHE alumni designers Jun Jun Ablaza, Eerie Angeles, Tracy Dizon, Jan Garcia, Jojie Lloren, Lito Perez, Pidge Reyes and Michele Sison.
The multi-awarded UP Singing Ambassadors, under the baton of Ed Manguiat, will perform the musical numbers. Manguiat is also an alumnus of the College of Home Economics with a degree in BS Hotel and Restaurant Management.
