Christmas is bright at Meralco

MANILA, Philippines - The Meralco Development Center (MMLDC) officially welcomed the holiday season with the annual Christmas tree lighting last Dec. 3. More than an occasion to mark this joyous month, the event took on a deeper meaning as it symbolized the resilience of the Filipino people in rising above the challenges and tragedies of 2009.

“Despite the unfortunate events that have unfolded in our country, Christmas is still worth celebrating,” said Leonisa C. dela Llana, MMLDC vice president, as she led the ceremonial lighting of the MMLDC Christmas tree. “The presence of Christ is the main reason for commemorating Christmas and we should keep that in our hearts.”

Now in its fifth year, the event was witnessed by the center’s employees, contractors and in-house clients, who were welcomed by Vivien C. Arnobit, director for academic services. The ceremony was also graced by members of MMLDC’s board of trustees, which includes Gerry dela Paz, Anna Marie Lerma, Atty. Teresita Magpayo, Carl Aquino and Agnes Fidelino.

A candle-lighting activity followed to symbolize solidarity and hope. MMLDC officers and staff also took the opportunity to recognize the collective success of the center in its 10th year and honored the efforts and dedication of the center’s members.

This year, MMLDC has chosen the House of Refuge Foundation Inc. (HORFI) as its beneficiary. HORFI, which houses orphaned kids, was greatly affected by the Ondoy typhoon since it is located in Provident Village, Marikina. Gladys Bunao, HORFI executive director, expressed her appreciation to MMLDC for hosting a day of fun for the more than 30 kids.

“These kids have endured a lot of trials in their young life, especially with what happened during Ondoy. Therefore, we thank companies with a heart such as MMLDC for providing a day of fun and laughter for these kids, especially in this season of giving,” Bunao said.

She also presented an overview of the mission, vision and activities of HORFI as well as a message of thanks for having been chosen as beneficiary.

The kids from HORFI treated the audience to a dance and song number. They were surprised with a gift-giving and special appearance of Santa Claus. They also participated in the Lakbay Kalikasan, where they were entertained with a bird show and educated about proper waste management and caring for the environment.
