MANILA, Philippines — In a country where basketball and boxing dominate the sports scene, it is impressive how volleyball has managed to grab share of Filipino sports fans. From the long lines of people eagerly waiting outside the arena to the tremendous number of tweets every game, there is no denying the traction and popularity that Philippine volleyball and its players have gained over the years.
For this generation, two names come to mind when we speak of the sport—Alyssa Valdez and Mika Reyes. Because of their unparalleled skill and passion for volleyball, these athletic “it girls” are much sought-after even from their collegiate days. They are also among the most recognized athletes of their time, having scored a slew of awards in various volleyball leagues and conferences. While they may have already graduated from donning their school colors, their athletic careers are far from over. Both are looking to expand their legacy beyond the UAAP court with Valdez joining Thai team 3BB Nakornnont and Reyes signing with the Petron Tri-Active Spikers.
With both players are approaching the height of their careers, how do they keep their momentum going? Their answer is simple: Living active.
This year, the former on-court rivals are coming together to advocate for health and fitness. As the new ambassadors of the Philam Vitality Active app, they aim to bring out the best in every Filipino by encouraging everyone to lead healthier and more active lives.
The app is designed to reward its users for every personal health goal they achieve. Every user is tasked to complete a short questionnaire to calculate one’s Vitality age as a gauge of how well he or she lives. They will then be given weekly challenges that they can accomplish by completing a certain number of steps as measured by a fitness device or app. For every challenge successfully completed, users will receive exciting rewards such as discounts and passes to SM Cinema, SM Ice Skating, SM Bowling, Blink and Explorium.
“As a professional athlete, I live a very active lifestyle so this app serves as a great reminder to keep active everyday,” says former Lady Eagle Valdez. “It was important for me to be part of something that stands to help so many people.”
As for Reyes, she believes the project will help many people prevent illnesses and enjoy more of their lives. “This app will motivate everyone to make better decisions and take charge of their health,” she says.
With these powerhouse athletes on board, Philam seeks to encourage more Filipinos to start their journey towards health and fitness with the Vitality Active app.
