MANILA, Philippines - Telco giant Sun Cellullar is predicting a marked drop in the price of internet browsing in the country as it launches a new rate of P15 for unlimited 24-hour browsing.
Michele Curran, Sun Vice President for Data Services, said that the network has partnered with mobile web browser Opera Software "to democratize internet access" in the country.
"We acknowledge the growing penetration of the Internet across all age and social groups, and how it is becoming deeply incorporated into the lifestyle of the average Filipino," Curran said in the launch of the new offering on Thursday.
The new tie-in called Browse On: Opera 15 allows Sun subscribers to enjoy unlimited mobile internet browsing using Opera Mini on their phones for just P15 per day.
Opera Software Chief Executive Officer Lars Boilseen said that the new offer is supported by around 3,000 types of handsets which can run Opera Mini, known for its compression technology potentially allowing faster browsing.
"Opera Mini is a perfect supplement to Sun Cellular's affordable, high speed third generation connectivity. Regardless of the smartphone platform of users, they will find this a value-added experience to mobile Internet browsing even without having to spend much.
Other charges may apply, however, for background applications that may use up paid cellular data outside the Opera browser.
