How to get that barely-there luminous makeup look

Glow, girl, glow!: To get a gleam, use either a powder highlighter (like MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish powder) with very fine shimmer or a liquid/cream highlighter, and blend it along the tops of your cheekbones.

Hi, Regina!

I have always wanted to try the dewy look, but I end up looking oily and shiny. How do I achieve the look? Can you suggest products that wouldn’t need a pro to apply?

Grace

If you love looking at runway makeup (like I do!), you’ll notice that almost all the models seem to be rocking that barely-there, luminous makeup look. A little dewiness makes your skin seem healthy and radiant, but you don’t want to be gleaming all over. You want the center of your face to remain matte and shine-free, limiting the dewy effect to the outer areas of your face, specifically the tops of your cheekbones.

If you’re extra oily, prep with a mattifying primer (many of my makeup artist friends swear by Make Up For Ever’s All Mat), or dust your shade of powder on the shine-prone areas of your face: the center of your forehead, your nose, and your chin. To get the gleam, you can use either a powder highlighter with very fine shimmer (chunky bits of glitter will look super fake), or a liquid/cream highlighter, and blend it along the tops of your cheekbones by either dusting or dabbing it on gently. (Try MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish powder, or a liquid highlighter like Benefit’s Moon Beam if you’re fair, or Sun Beam if you have a tan.) Don’t forget to dab along your brow bones for extra lift, just under the outer corners of your brows; and in the inner corners of your eyelids to brighten. You can even create the illusion of fuller lips by applying a touch of highlighter to the top of your cupid’s bow. You glow, girl!

Keep your body skin forever young

Good Day, Ms. Rissa!

I couldn’t remember the exact date, but since day one that I read your column, I’ve been into it. I also love that the products you recommend are at  budget-friendly prices. I’m a boyish gal, which means I love to do men stuff and have a real active lifestyle. I remember one of my heroines named Tyra Banks says, “It’s important to have a good skin regimen before I go and conquer the world.” Thus, I’m asking for your help if you know some products that are budget- or student-friendly — a lotion/moisturizer/whitener/sunscreen/sunblock all in one. I’m planning to travel and engage in a lot of adventures, which include staying under the sun, and I don’t want my proud Oriental skin to suffer at the end of the day.

Eyessa, 22

I salute you for wanting to protect your skin as early as now. The damage we see on our skin today is a result of negligence during our younger years. It is never too early to fight and prevent aging. I’m sure we all care for our faces but let’s not allow the skin on our bodies to betray our age. An anti-aging product for the body is a beauty-must!  I happily found the perfect anti-aging regimen for my face through Pond’s, but it always frustrated me there wasn’t an all-in-one product for the body that protects, evens out the skin tone, and fights aging. Thankfully, I don’t have to slather on Pond’s on my body because Vaseline recently came out with their latest product — Vaseline Perfect 10 Whitening and Anti-Aging Lotion (available at leading department stores, supermarkets, personal care stores). I have always been dreaming of a product like this and was so excited when they recently launched it with Daphne Oseña Paez as brand ambassador. This product nourishes the skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, treats age spots, blemishes and hyper-pigmentation, boosts radiance, delivers fairer, even-toned skin, and provides UVA/UVB protection from the aging and burning effects of the sun. It boasts Retinol, the best proven anti-aging ingredient which stimulates collagen production and retains skin elasticity; antioxidants which strengthen skin and arrest the formation of fine lines and sagging skin; and AHA that exfoliates dead skin cells and smoothens skin texture. I love its barely-there scent, which will never battle with your favorite fragrance. Yes, no coconut-like sunblock smell! And wow, it feels so wonderfully smooth on the body! It never leaves a sticky residue despite our humid weather. All it leaves is soft, ultra-smooth, fairer, glowing, young-looking skin. Yes, now even our bodies can remain forever young!

Blooming in a full skirt

Dear Lucy,

I am in my 30s and am in love with full-skirted dresses. I am worried though that it will no longer be age-appropriate. My worst fashion nightmare is that I will look as if I am going to the prom!

Also, what kind of pants should I buy to update my wardrobe?

Eliza

The perfect solution is a bodice-hugging, full-skirted dress in an eye-catching sheen. It is important that you find a fabric that is structured and sophisticated, in a solid color. Avoid frou-frou details like beads and ruffles. The look should still be sleek despite the full skirt and keep jewelry and shoes simple yet smart.

Re pants, cropped pants are always a wardrobe standout. Wear it with a blazer or pretty top tucked into it and complete the dressy look with high heels. You can also dress it down Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O. style with a plain shirt and ballet flats.
