Jonathan Adler for Lacoste: 'If your heirs won't fight over it, we won't make it'

MANILA, Philippines -  Each year, Lacoste commissions a guest designer to re-imagine its iconic L.12.12 polo shirt as part of the Holiday Collector’s Series. Past editions have included UK design stars Tom Dixon and Michael Young, Brazilian brothers The Campanas and most recently contemporary Chinese artist Li Xiaofeng.

For the 2011 edition, which is the sixth in the series, Lacoste has invited American designer Jonathan Adler to conceive an exclusive and equally exciting polo and packaging project that may very well leave you questioning whether it is better to give or to receive.

Known for his work that mixes modernist forms with bold colors and groovy graphics, the Jonathan Adler name is a promise of impeccable craftsmanship and distinctive design. His contemporary yet timeless style--an aesthetic he calls “Happy Chic” — is every bit as vivacious and unique as the designer himself. Committed to producing beautiful collectibles for the ages, the company’s motto is: “If your heirs won’t fight over it, we won’t make it.”

For the Lacoste Holiday Collector’s Series #6, Jonathan has created unique polos using contemporary twists on traditional needlepoint techniques, one of the crafts he often incorporates into his own design work.

“I love the way Lacsote feels totally contemporary but also has an element of nostalgia,” Jonathan continues.  “With this project, I wanted to evoke the nifty and sporty feeling of American country clubs in the 1960s.”

Last June, Lacoste’s collaboration with Jonathan Adler was celebrated at an event in Paris inside the Petit Palais South Gallery and lush garden. The polos Jonathan conceived for the project were showcased on mannequins playing mixed doubles on a tennis court purpose built in the gallery. Under the portico surrounding the garden, guests were invited to practice Jonathan’s favorite sport, ping-pong, using customized paddles printed with the same motifs featured on the polos. French sound sensation Yelle gave an incredible live performance.

Guests at the event during Paris menswear fashion week received a Jonathan Adler for Lacoste summer paper fan, ideal to keep the heat at bay for the rest of the week. Bite-sized BBQ morsels along with baby burgers and hot dogs were served. A dedicated Cosmo Bar ensured guests got into the New York state of mind even while mingling in the middle of the City of Lights. Dessert included charming mini cupcakes and doll-sized ice-cream sandwiches.

The Lacoste Holiday Collector’s Series #6 will be available in Manila this December at all Lacoste boutiques.

In the Philippines, Lacoste is exclusively distributed by Stores Specialists, Inc. (SSI) and is located at Greenbelt 3, Rustan’s Makati, Rustan’s Tower, The Power Plant Mall, Megamall, The Podium, Mall of Asia, Gateway, Trinoma, Eastwood Mall, Newport Mall, Robinsons Galleria, Robinson’s Place Manila, Alabang Town Center - Corte de las Palmas, Ayala Center Cebu, SM Davao, and Abreeza Davao City.
