Jose Mendoza’s ‘Modern Sculptures’at The Crucible

MANILA, Philippines - Jose Mendoza explores, new path in “Modern Sculptures,” which opens tomorrow at The Crucible Gallery, fourth floor, SM Megamall A, Mandaluyong City. The show runs until Jan. 8, 2010.

Creating mostly pieces in cast bronze and having developed a style to which it is suited, Mendoza was inspired by the challenge to find ways to express himself through this new medium.

“I developed a fascination for sheet metal as I saw and admired the recent works of National Artist Arturo Luz and architect Lor Calma. I was particularly interested in how to create depth using this material. I wanted to see what forms would emerge out of this exploration,” Mendoza says.

Pinoy art on wheels

The Philippine Tuberculosis Society’s Christmas seal design won first prize in the 40th Union World Conference on Lung Health organized by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease held recently in Cancun, Mexico.

“Art on Wheels,” the winning design concept, was rendered by various Filipino artists.

Raising money for TB treatment by selling Christmas-themed stamps is a time-honored tradition started by a Danish postman named Einar Holboell in 1904.

Every year, the contest is held at the World Conference of Lung Health as part of its fund-raising activities. The Philippines has won two consecutive first prizes in 2005 and 2009. In 2004 and 2007, they garnered second prize; and third prize in 2006.
