In 1999, fashion model-turned-fashion entrepreneur Tina Maristela Ocampo launched The Black Shop (TBS). Having years of experience in the style industry and with the guidance of her husband, marketing genius Ricco Ocampo, Tina worked on the concept that any color would work as an accent when juxtaposed with black. Ocampo’s initial collection showcased glamorous clothes mostly in black and white with a small selection of seasonal palettes but eventually expanded into a wider range of hues. The store offered ensembles adhering to classic cuts and enhanced by interesting twists, a design concept that Tina maintains to this day.
Upon the encouragement of friends in the business world, Ocampo branched out into office uniforms in 2006. “I started out making uniforms for companies with small staff population. I would ask the ladies to go to TBS and pick out designs that they all would agree to have as their basic wear. Then I would make a few changes, perhaps in the collar, the pockets or sleeves in order to ‘personalize’ the look for the corporation.” Since then, Ocampo has, among her clients, institutional accounts such as Smart Telecom, Petron and the Manila Diamond Hotel.
Ocampo’s advice for the female executive: “Keep your lines simple. Definitely add accessories to enhance what you are wearing but make sure not to pile on too many pieces. Be mindful that you are in a business environment and make certain that what you wear is a reflection of the culture of your institution.”
