Zap those zits!

MANILA, Philippines - Having acne isn’t just the problem of teenagers in the throes of puppy love. Even adults are prone to breakouts.

Although grown-up breakouts are different from the kind that happens during puberty, more than half of women over 25 can still have acne, according to research conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology.

“Adult acne is deeper and appears as cysts, or ‘under the skin’ pimples, which can’t be removed easily,” according to Dr. Abe Marinduque, medical director of Beverly Hills 6750, a multi-specialty aesthetics clinic in Makati.

The exact cause of acne is still a mystery. Research, however, points to four factors: excess oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation. These are, in turn, affected by hereditary or genetic factors, hormones, menstruation or emotional stress.

Although promises of overnight results and acne cures are promising, the truth is immediate cure for acne does not exist.

“Authentic acne treatment takes time especially for stubborn adult acne. The goal is to decrease proliferation of acne-causing bacteria and reduce sebaceous gland activity. When bacteria proliferate in clogged pores, they can cause bumpy and inflamed acne lesions, which cannot be treated easily,” Marinduque adds.

Best option

Some Filipinos, with their attachment to lore and unwarranted beliefs, sometimes mix science with tradition, making acne treatment complicated.

“Acne on the face, chest and back are all treatable. But one must not fall into the trap of quick-fixes, guessing and experimentation. There is no ‘one-cure’ for all types of acne problems,” adds Marinduque.

With more remarkable breakthroughs in dermatology, treatment has now become staid and solid. A fine example of this is the E-Max Lithos Acne Treatment (using Elos Technology), which is recommended by experts for hard-to-treat acne problems.

The treatment makes use of the Acne Applicator (AC), which combines photodynamic blue light and gentle radio-frequency energies to decrease proliferation of acne-causing bacteria; and deter the sebaceous gland from overproduction of oil. It also promotes healing of the skin after acne breakouts.

E-Max Lithos Acne Treatment is recommended for those who seek solutions different from traditional or oral therapies for acne, or those who have not responded to traditional acne treatments.

One must not take acne lightly. “It’s best that a consultation is made with a dermatologist”, according to Marinduque, who is part of the stellar mix of medical experts at BH6750.

Beverly Hills 6750’s corporate purpose revolves around its belief in “Positive Transformation” — change not only in terms of a physical, cosmetic improvement, but also in relation to one’s self-esteem and confidence.

The clinic’s second branch opened recently in Timog Avenue, Quezon City.
