PNP probes House website hacking

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday called on government agencies to review and strengthen their cybersecurity systems after hackers defaced the official website of the House of Representatives.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the cyber threat underscored the need for stronger digital defenses and closer coordination among agencies responsible for protecting government networks.
“This incident serves as a reminder that cybersecurity must remain a top priority of all government agencies. We encourage institutions to regularly review their security protocols, update their systems and strengthen monitoring mechanisms against evolving cyber threats,” Nartatez said.
According to the PNP, the House website was defaced on Saturday, days after a similar cyber attack targeted the Senate website.
A group of hackers reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying these were carried out in protest against alleged corruption in government.
Nartatez said the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) had been directed to coordinate with House information technology and cybersecurity personnel to determine the source, method and extent of the breach.
“I have ordered the ACG to immediately coordinate with the House of Representatives and other relevant agencies. We will pursue a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible for the breach are identified and held accountable,” Nartatez said.
Police said criminal charges would be filed against those found responsible under the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
