‘Nando’ now a super typhoon, threatening northernmost areas

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Nando has intensified, reaching the super typhoon category as it moves westward over the Philippine Sea.
As of 11 a.m., state weather bureau PAGASA reported that the center of Super Typhoon Nando was located 535 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
It packed with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 230 kph. Its strong typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 530 kilometers.
As the super typhoon approaches, PAGASA has maintained Signal No. 2 over several northern Luzon areas, which can expect gale-force winds.

- The northern and eastern portions of Isabela
- Apayao
- The eastern portion of Kalinga
- The northern portion of Ilocos Norte

Forecast track and hazards
Nando is forecast to continue moving westward toward extreme northern Luzon.
On its current track, the eye of the super typhoon may pass close to or even make landfall over the Babuyan Islands or Batanes between tomorrow (Monday) afternoon and evening.
The storm is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility by the morning of Tuesday, September 23.
PAGASA has issued storm surge warning No. 5, warning of a high risk of "life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding three meters" in low-lying coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan (including Babuyan Islands), Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.
Sea travel also remains risky for all types of vessels in affected areas.
