LPA becomes Tropical Depression Kiko

MANILA, Philippines — A low pressure area (LPA) east of extreme northern Luzon has developed into a tropical depression, the state weather bureau PAGASA said on Wednesday, September 3.
It was given the local name "Kiko."
As of 10:00 a.m., PAGASA reported that the center of Kiko was located 1,170 kilometers east-northeast of extreme northern Luzon.
The storm has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gusts of up to 70 kph, and is moving northward at 15 kph.
The LPA intensified at 8 a.m.
Despite this intensification, PAGASA said Tropical Depression Kiko is unlikely to directly affect the country, and no tropical cyclone wind signals are currently in effect.
The weather bureau also said the storm is not expected to affect sea conditions in the country’s coastal waters.
Kiko is forecast to move generally northward and is expected to accelerate and exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Wednesday afternoon.
It is also projected to strengthen into a tropical storm tonight or early Thursday morning.
