CEBU, Philippines —  The University of Philippines (UP) Cebu has reaffirmed its plans to develop their campus at the South Raoad Properties (SRP) amid speculation that another university is interested in the area.

In a statement issued June 19, 2024, UP Cebu underscored that they have not received any formal request from any other university manifesting their interest in the said lot.

UP Cebu Chancellor Leo Malagar also highlighted the university's commitment to its “meticulously planned projects” on the SRP lot, which is accordingly funded by the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2023 and 2024, and UP System funds.

"These plans include the expansion of academic programs, specifically graduate and professional courses, and the construction of a new building dedicated to fostering Cebu's creative industry," Chancellor Malagar stated.

"The SRP lot has been reserved for long-term projects that align with our vision for UP Cebu's future and our contributions to Cebu's development. Our plans are not made overnight but are the results of extensive planning and strategic funding allocations," he added.

The same statement also cited key features of the SRP Development Plan, which include a total land area of 51,237 square meters.

It includes the existing buildings on the site, which are the e-Library, School of Professional Building, and the school’s Auditorium Building.

Among the proposed infrastructures intended for the said lot is the new academic building dedicated for different programs, such as Master Data Science and Master of Science in Computer Science; a four-storey dormitory building with commercial spaces on the first floor; an open space parking for 100 cars; and a natural habitat or a butterfly garden.

Aside from this, other planned developments also include additional academic buildings, an amphitheater for outdoor activities, and a Carillon Tower.

The statement also disclosed that the Multi-Purpose Building (Dormitory) Project will have a gross floor area of 2,842 square meters, with a substructure cost of  P39,788,000 and a super structure cost of P127,890,000, bringing the total projected construction cost to P167,678,000.00.

“This dormitory will provide much-needed accommodation for the increasing number of students, as well as space for faculty, staff, and visiting professors,” the statement read.

“UP Cebu reiterates that its SRP lot is integral to its long-term development plans and remains committed to utilizing the space for projects that align with its mission and vision,” it added.
