Comelec reminds Naga voters of plebiscite prohibitions

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections is reminding voters and stakeholders in Naga City, Camarines Sur of the prohibited activities on Nov. 21, when residents will vote on Naga’s proposed conversion into a highly urbanized city.
The Comelec said campaigning, vote solicitation and the distribution of free food, drinks, transportation and other items of value will be prohibited on plebiscite day, as provided under the Omnibus Election Code.
Soliciting votes or conducting propaganda for or against the proposal will be prohibited within polling places and within the 30-meter radius of these areas.
The Comelec also prohibits the sale, purchase, serving or consumption of liquor, as well as the carrying of deadly weapons inside polling places.
Selling merchandise and refreshments within 30 meters from polling places is prohibited, as well as the holding of fairs, cockfights, boxing matches, horse races and similar sporting events.
The plebiscite will determine whether voters ratify Presidential Proclamation 1267, which provides for the conversion of Naga into a highly urbanized city.
The Comelec has called for a peaceful and orderly plebiscite as residents decide on the proposed change in the city’s status.
