South Cotabato school shooting victims get cash aid

MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has ordered the immediate provision of financial aid to the victims of the Sept. 18 school shooting in South Cotabato.

Executive Secretary Ralph Recto yesterday said the President wants to ensure that necessary assistance reaches the victims and their families without delay.

Recto said he has directed the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Finance and Administration to promptly process and release the cash assistance in accordance with existing laws and policies.

His office, however, did not mention the amount of assistance to be provided.

Marcos earlier ordered a thorough investigation into the shooting at the Banga National High School in South Cotabato that left three dead and six others wounded.

Responsible gun ownership urged

The Philippine National Police (PNP) urged licensed firearm holders nationwide to practice responsible handling and safe storage of firearms as a daily habit to prevent unauthorized access and protect families.

Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., PNP chief, made the appeal as the PNP Civil Security Group rolled out its nationwide “Gun Safety Advocacy Campaign” following recent school shooting incidents involving minors.

Nartatez said gun ownership carries continuous obligations that go beyond basic licensing requirements. — Rainier Allan Ronda
