Riders back LTFRB’s industry cleanup

MANILA, Philippines — The Motorcycle Taxi Rider Association (METRO) expressed its support for the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)’s “cleanup” and professionalization of the motorcycle taxi industry.

At a press briefing, METRO co-convenor Jayson Luna said the professionalization of the industry will serve both riders and commuters.

The LTFRB, in a memorandum, capped rider registration after it discovered cases of overboarding. It also prohibited “multi-homing,” which allows riders to accept bookings in-between applications.

By identifying the number of legitimate riders and addressing the alleged “ghost riders” and unauthorized overboarding, Luna said riders will have a “more professional and traceable system” that would strengthen their protection.

Luna added that commuters expressed the need for regulation to ensure an accountable public transportation service.

“You (riders) are not the target of the regulation. You are the ones getting protected here,” he said.

Luna urged the community to help riders register with the LTFRB. A registration fee of P260 will be required while platforms will handle the processing.

Consumer group Digital Pinoys said having a verified list of riders will give the government reliable data for future policy decisions.
