MANILA, Philippines — Mayor Jennifer Barzaga of Dasmariñas, Cavite will run in a special election intended to fill the congressional seat left vacant by the expulsion of her son, Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga, according to the Commission on Elections.

The Comelec said Barzaga filed her certificate of candidacy yesterday, the last day of the COC filing.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the older Barzaga is the fifth aspirant for the lone congressional seat of Dasmariñas.

Earlier, former Vice Mayor Rex Mangubat, Marvin Dupal-Ag, Jacinto Frani Jr. and Leysander Ordenes filed COCs for the special election scheduled on Aug. 29.

The filing of COCs started on Wednesday.

Garcia earlier said Kiko Barzaga could still run for the post as his expulsion does not perpetually disqualify him from holding public office.

Kiko Barzaga was expelled by the House of Representatives for disorderly behavior, conduct unbecoming of a public official and violation of the House Code of Conduct.
