MANILA, Philippines —  Sen. Rodante Marcoleta needs to finish his antibiotics for mild pneumonia before he can be transferred to a regular detention facility, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said yesterday. Marcoleta, who was arrested last week on plunder charges, is “clinically stable,” according to his medical report as summarized by Lt. Col. Belany Bayani, chief of the PNP General Hospital internal medicine department.

“His blood pressure is already controlled, down to 130/90 on Monday from a peak of 160/90,” Bayani told reporters. “We have submitted the medical report. So let’s just wait for what happens.”

Marcoleta will need to take his antibiotics for pneumonia until tomorrow, after which he can be transferred to the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas, to which the Sandiganbayan has committed him.

The 72-year-old senator was also diagnosed with a degenerative disc disease.

Bayani, however, said Marcoleta does not need to undergo therapy for the disease.

“For now, he is only taking rehab medicine,” Bayani said. “We are giving him analgesics.”
