NEW YORK, United States — The Golden State Warriors remain the betting favorite to land LeBron James, but their pursuit of the NBA's all-time leading scorer has become considerably more complicated.

Just a day after reports outlined an ambitious plan to reunite James with former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Anthony Davis in Golden State, new reporting suggests that scenario is no longer on the table.

According to The Athletic, the proposed Davis trade with the Washington Wizards has effectively "died on the vine."

The report said the Warriors are no longer pursuing Davis, while Washington has no interest in moving the 10-time All-Star to Golden State or elsewhere at this time.

The development removes what had been viewed as a key piece of the Warriors' recruiting pitch to James following his decision to leave the Lakers after eight seasons.

Warriors still lead betting markets

Despite the setback, oddsmakers continue to view Golden State as the frontrunner.

At 247 Bet, ranked among the top online sportsbooks by Kurkohai, the Warriors remain the favorites to sign James ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat.

Prediction market Kalshi paints a similar picture, giving Golden State a 49% chance of landing the four-time NBA champion, compared with 28% for Cleveland and 16% for Miami.

Recruitment now takes center stage

While the Davis plan appears to have collapsed, Golden State has not backed away from its pursuit.

According to The Athletic, Warriors decision-makers have received no indication that James has chosen Golden State, meaning the franchise still has work to do in free agency.

"There appears to be some level of recruitment required," the report noted.

That recruitment is already underway.

According to ClutchPoints, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are expected to play active roles in recruiting James once free agency opens.

The report added that the Warriors' front office remains confident it can ultimately convince James to come to the Bay Area despite the latest setback.

Competition remains fierce

Golden State is far from the only contender.

The Cleveland Cavaliers continue to be viewed as one of James' strongest options after multiple reports linked the four-time MVP to a possible third stint with his hometown franchise.

The Miami Heat have also emerged as a legitimate contender, with league reports indicating the organization would welcome a reunion with the player who led the franchise to NBA championships in 2012 and 2013.

James has instructed agent Rich Paul to hear pitches from interested teams before deciding where to play his record-setting 24th NBA season.

For now, the Warriors remain the favorites in the betting markets.

But with the Davis blueprint no longer viable, Golden State's chances may ultimately depend less on blockbuster trades and more on whether Curry and Green can convince one of the greatest players in NBA history that the Bay Area gives him the best opportunity to chase a fifth championship.
