Tulfo welcomes DepEd’s safety measures

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Raffy Tulfo has welcomed nationwide school safety measures enforced by the Department of Education (DepEd) following the June 22 school shooting in Tacloban perpetrated by two Grade 9 boys ages 14 and 15.
Handheld metal detectors and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be deployed in public schools, based on Education Secretary Sonny Angara’s directive.
After the incident that claimed the lives of three students, Tulfo called up Angara to follow through on his proposals to strengthen security in schools.
At a committee hearing on March 17, Tulfo recommended the installation of CCTVs in classrooms and other common areas.
On Aug. 12, 2025, Tulfo proposed having security guards equipped with handheld metal detectors.
Angara assured Tulfo that the DepEd will act on his recommendations as soon as possible.
“Although the DepEd has taken action, my question is, why only now? I’ve been advocating for this, but why did many lives have to be wasted before they acted on it?” Tulfo lamented.
