‘School repair requests reach P28 billion

MANILA, Philippines — Up to P28 billion worth of repair requests from schools nationwide have been received by the Department of Education (DepEd) as classes are set to open on June 8.
Aside from the requests, the DepEd needs P2.8 billion for the repair of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in schools.
DepEd said only vital repairs will continue, to ensure that urgent structural interventions are addressed first.
The agency said not all repairs need to be completed before classes begin.
To track school readiness, Education Secretary Sonny Angara has launched Project Handa.
The project intends to prioritize deployment of resources and address school needs to ensure a smooth opening of classes.
“Through Project Handa, we can ensure that no region is left behind and every student has a safe and adequate space to study,” Angara said.
DepEd said that by tracking critical indicators across key components including physical facilities, support to learners and instructional readiness, the agency can deploy resources where these are needed most. –
