Here’s what’s keeping ex-DPWH chief Bonoan from returning

MANILA, Philippines — The return of former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Manuel Bonoan has been delayed due to complications from his wife’s medical procedure.

In a press briefing with reporters on Thursday, January 15, Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida said the lawyer of Bonoan sent an email before Christmas explaining that Bonoan could not return home as previously promised due to medical complications regarding an operation for his wife.

Vida said that he acknowledged the information provided by the lawyer but emphasized that he still requires specific details on Bonoan’s expected return date and the contact information of the relatives he is currently staying with in the U.S. and the Philippines.

“I took note na sinabi mo 'yan. Pero first, bigyan mo ako ng impormasyon kailan siya babalik,” Vida said to Bonoan’s lawyer.

(I have taken note of your statement. However, I first require information regarding his return date.)

Bonoan, who is the subject of an Immigration Lookout Bulletin over alleged negligence linked to anomalous flood control projects, left the Philippines on November 11 for the United States.

He transited through Taiwan before heading to the US, reportedly to accompany his wife for a medical procedure. His travel was expected to end by December 17.

However, as of writing, he has yet to return to the country.

Bonoan left the country while authorities were investigating reported irregularities in flood control projects overseen during his tenure as DPWH secretary.
