Bongbong Marcos will not resign, says Malacañang
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will not step down, said Malacañang on Tuesday, November 18.
Several groups, many of whom are pro-Duterte, are calling for Marcos to step down from his post as president following the ongoing corruption crisis in the government. These calls were further inflamed by allegations from resigned lawmaker Zaldy Co, saying that it was Marcos who ordered an insertion into the 2025 budget.
“Is this an option? The president is still working and keeps on working for the country. So it is not an option for the administration, for the President to resign,” Castro said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Castro said that supporters of Vice President Sara Duterte merely want the president to step down so that she can be the president.
Propagandists and destabilizers merely want to distract from the issue, Castro said. Should Marcos be removed from office, she questioned whether his successor is capable of eradicating corruption.
The Marcos administration has been under fire for several days after Co’s allegations. In the midst of the allegations, Marcos lost two key officials in his cabinet: former Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin and former Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman. The two former secretaries were also implicated in Co's corruption claims.
During a two-day rally by the Iglesia ni Cristo, the flames were further fanned by Sen. Imee Marcos, who accused her own brother of using illegal drugs.
Castro said that only those without critical thinking will give credence to these claims.
