MANILA, Philippines — At least four vessels ran aground across different provinces as Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong) lashed the Philippines, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Monday, November 10.

In a press briefing at the Office of Civil Defense, PCG deputy commander Capt. John Barrameda said that they have not recorded a maritime death yet, and they have recorded at least four vessels that ran aground.

These vessels included the following:

  • Tugboat, barge - San Jose, Antique
  • Landing craft tank - Nasugbu, Batangas
  • Motorbanca - San Vicente, Palawan

The PCG also received reports of a vessel running aground in Lemery, Batangas, which they are still verifying.

Barrameda said that there was no chance for them to have an oil spill.

Asked why these ships were sailing amid the strong wind signal warnings issued, Barrameda explained that the ships were docked in safe areas. However, the strong winds and waves were still able to cause them to run aground.

“Because of how large the cyclone was, incidents like this become hard to avoid,” he said in Filipino.

Uwan’s strong winds battered Luzon, uprooting trees and damaging seawalls. At least two people have been reported dead in Uwan’s wake.

Rescue and relief operations are still ongoing, with several towns still reeling from Uwan’s impact.
