MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced that they will carry out mandatory evacuations in areas considered high-risk as Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) continues to batter the country.

The DILG and the PNP said this in a joint statement on Sunday, November 9, noting that they issued guidelines on the handling of residents who refuse to leave their homes despite the danger.

According to the PNP and DILG, if residents continue to refuse evacuation despite repeated warnings and the presence of imminent danger, local government units and the police are authorized to enforce mandatory evacuation as long as such actions are carried out peacefully, respectfully and with proper documentation.

“Ensure that transportation, shelter, food, and medical aid are ready for evacuees, with priority for the elderly, children and persons with disabilities,” the joint statement read.

“The DILG and PNP call on all local leaders to act quickly and humanely. Protect every Filipino life. No one should be left behind,” it added.

As of 5 p.m., Uwan is estimated to be 110 kilometers north of Daet, Camarines Norte, or 150 kilometers east-northeast of Infanta, Quezon.
