PNP: Anti-cybercrime operations intensify

MANILA, Philippines — Operations against digital crimes are expected to intensify after the Philippines signed the United Nations Convention Against Cybercrimes.
Acting Philippine National Police chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. yesterday said the PNP is looking forward to an enhanced cybersecurity posture after the country became one of the first countries to join the global treaty.
Adopted by the UN in December last year, the treaty provides a unified framework for combating cybercrime and sharing electronic evidence against digital threats.
Nartatez has ordered the Anti-Cybercrime Group and police units to beef up operations against online scams, cyberhacking and related crimes.
Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda signed the treaty in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Meanwhile, Speaker Faustino Dy III wants the PNP to take stronger action against scam rings exploiting the names of public officials and institutions.
