Walang Pasok: Class, gov't work suspensions for Sept. 26 due to 'Opong'

MANILA, Philippines (Updated 6:15 p.m.) — Malacañang has ordered the suspension of classes at all levels and government work in Metro Manila and other areas on Friday, September 26, as Severe Tropical Storm Opong continues to bring heavy rains and strong winds across Luzon and Visayas.
On its forecast track, Opong is expected to pass close to or make landfall over Northern Samar early Friday morning, then cross the Bicol Region by late morning or early afternoon.
In Memorandum Circular No. 102, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said the suspension was approved following the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, which warned of heavy rains and strong winds.
The suspension of government offices and classes at all levels will cover the following areas:
National Capital Region

Region V (Bicol Region)
- Masbate
- Sorsogon
Region VIII (Eastern Visayas)
- Biliran
- Eastern Samar
- Northern Samar
- Samar (Western Samar)
Region IV-B (MIMAROPA)

Meanwhile, classes at all levels in the following areas are suspended:
Region IV-A (Calabarzon)
- Batangas
- Cavite
- Laguna
- Quezon
- Rizal
Region IV-B (MIMAROPA)
- Marinduque
- Oriental Mindoro
Region V (Bicol Region)
- Albay
- Camarines Norte
- Camarines Sur
- Catanduanes
Region VI (Western Visayas)
- Aklan
- Antique
- Capiz
- Guimaras
- Iloilo
- Negros Occidental
Region VIII (Eastern Visayas)

"However, agencies responsible for basic, vital and health services, preparedness and response duties must continue to remain operational to ensure continuity of essential government functions," Malacañang said.
"Non-vital government employees of subject agencies may be engaged under approved alternate work arrangements, subject to applicable laws, rules and regulations," it added.
Suspension of work in private companies is left to the discretion of their management, the Palace said.
Local governments in other areas may also declare localized suspensions depending on weather conditions.
