Despite raps, Remulla enters Ombudsman list after securing clearance

MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla is now on the shortlist of candidates for Ombudsman after securing clearance from the office.
Remulla told reporters Wednesday that the clearance had been transmitted to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).
“Basta may clearance na. Nasa JBC na,” Remulla said. (It has clearance. It's now with the JBC.)

On September 12, Remulla said a kidnapping complaint filed against him before the Office of the Ombudsman had been dismissed, clearing the way for his potential appointment.
The complaint, lodged by Sen. Imee Marcos, stemmed from the government’s handover of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court.
Remulla, however, still faces pending cases. Sebastan, son of Duterte and vice mayor of Davao City, has filed kidnapping and illegal detention complaints against the Justice chief.
Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio has also filed arbitrary detention charges over the arrest and detention of former Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo and Whirlwind Corp. incorporator Cassandra Ong.
Philstar.com has sought confirmation from JBC sources on whether they have received the clearance but has yet to get a response.
