Sotto-led Senate bares new CA members, committee chairs

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate continued its shake-up following the election of Senate President Tito Sotto, naming new committee chairs and Commission on Appointments (CA) representatives.
Sen. Kiko Pangilinan has been selected as the chairperson of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
“I move to elect Francis Kiko Pangilinan as Chairperson of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights vice Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano,” Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri said. Pangilinan will also serve as the Senate representative to the Judicial and Bar Council.
“Ngayon, handa tayong ipagpatuloy ang laban para sa mas matibay na hudikatura, mas epektibong sistema ng hustisya, at mas matatag na proteksyon sa karapatang pantao—mga repormang magpapalapit ng hustisya sa bawat Pilipino,” Pangilinan said in a Facebook post.
(Now, we are ready to continue the fight for a stronger judiciary, a more effective justice system, and greater protection of human rights—reforms that will bring justice closer to every Filipino.)
Sen. Camille Villar, who retained her membership in the majority after voting for Sotto, has been selected as the new chair of the Committee on Economic Affairs, replacing Zubiri.
Sen. Lito Lapid will be the new chair of the Committee on Cooperatives, replacing Sen. Imee Marcos.
The CA is a vital body. CA contingents from the House and Senate are tasked with confirming or rejecting presidential appointees to balance power.
The new CA group is now composed of the following:
- Sen. Risa Hontiveros
- Sen. Loren Legarda
- Sen. JV Ejercito
- Sen. Raffy Tulfo
- Sen. Mark Villar
- Sen. Ping Lacson
- Sen. Lito Lapid
- Sen. Joel Villanueva
- Sen. Bong Go
- Sen. Rodante Marcoleta
- Sen. Imee Marcos
- Sen. Jinggoy Estrada
Hontiveros, Legarda and Lacson are the new CA members, while the rest retain their seats. The only senator removed from the CA is Sen. Bato dela Rosa.
