MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) reported an increase in road accidents, with a total of 418 incidents recorded since December 22.

In the past 24 hours on Sunday, December 29, 68 additional cases were documented. This is a 38% increase compared to the same period last year.

The incidents, recorded from December 22 to 6 a.m. on December 29, were collected from eight DOH pilot sites.

Of the total incidents, 291 involved motorcycles and 70 were linked to drivers under the influence of alcohol.

A total of 356 accidents involved individuals not using protective gear such as helmets or seatbelts.

The DOH provided the following safety tips for motorists:

  • Avoid driving while tired or under the influence of alcohol, as it can impair coordination, concentration and reaction time.
  • Ensure helmets are worn by motorcycle riders and passengers, and always wear seat belts in cars.
  • Follow speed limits and road signs to reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Get at least seven to eight hours of sleep before traveling to remain alert.
  • Minimize distractions by avoiding the use of mobile phones while driving.
  • In case of emergencies, immediately call 911 or the DOH’s hotline at 1555.
