Comelec eyes amended social media campaign rules
MANILA, Philippines — Following the elections in the United States, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is looking into amending the rules of social media campaigns.
The US elections taught the poll body lessons on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in political campaigns, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said yesterday.
“I will convince the Comelec en banc to amend certain provisions of our social media guidelines to protect citizens’ rights,” he said.
People must understand how candidates are using AI to influence voters and spread disinformation, Garcia noted.
Upon the US government’s invitation, Garcia said some Comelec commissioners are now in America observing the elections.
“We would like to have exchanges not only with the American democracy but also other election management bodies,” he said.
Meanwhile, the progressive Makabayan coalition said their social media accounts and content are at risk of being taken down based on Comelec rules.
