DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The Duterte-Nograles political rivalry in Davao City was formalized yesterday, with former Civil Service Commission (CSC) chair Karlo Nograles filing his certificate of candidacy for mayor.

Speaking to the media after his filing, Nograles acknowledged that he would be facing political giants, but he is ready to face the challenges.

He said he is ready to woo Davaoeños, many of whom are firmly loyal to the Dutertes.

“We fight for the ones we love,” Nograles proclaimed.

The former CSC chief stressed that he is running to give Davaoeños a choice other than the Dutertes.

“The people of Davao have the right to choose the right choice at the right time in our beloved city’s history,” he said.

Nograles said the city can still be improved after comparing it to cities in the National Capital Region, specifically Makati, Valenzuela and Taguig.

“We are the premier city of the south. How come we still (did) not catch up? If you really want it, I’m here. I’m offering myself,” he said.

Nograles will be facing former president Rodrigo Duterte for city mayor. His sister, Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta party-list Rep. Migs Nograles, will also be facing a Duterte, namely Davao City First District Rep. Paolo Duterte, who is seeking reelection.

Meanwhile, Karlo’s running mate First District councilor Bernard Al-ag will compete against Davao City incumbent mayor Sebastian Duterte for vice mayor.
