Five Lagons joining polls

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Five members of the Lagon family in Cebu have filed their respective Certificate of Candidacy (COC) two days before the October 8 deadline.

The patriarch, Sonny “SL” Lagon, will run again as first nominee of Ako Bisaya Party-list, with Carissa Garcia, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia’s daughter, as the second nominee.

In a Facebook post, Sonny said he was honored to announce that Ako Bisaya Partylist has officially filed its Certificate of Nomination and Certificate of Acceptance of Nomination, signifying its intent to participate in the 2025 National and Local Elections under the party-list system, before the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

“Our commitment to advancing the welfare and interests of the Bisaya communities across the country remains stronger than ever,” he said.

For years, Sonny said, they “have tirelessly championed the needs of our kababayan in various sectors—promoting access to education, healthcare, livelihood opportunities, and the preservation of our rich cultural heritage”.

“This election is yet another opportunity for us to continue pushing for meaningful legislation that addresses the real challenges faced by our people, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao,” he said.

“We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support and trust from the Bisaya community. Together, we will forge ahead to work for progress, unity, and empowerment. We call on our fellow Bisaya to stand with us, unite, and help us secure a brighter future for all,” he added.

Daphne, Sonny’s wife, is seeking reelection as Cebu’s 6th district congressional representative.

“I am running for a second term because I believe in the power of public service. I believe that together, we can build a more prosperous, inclusive, and resilient future for every person in our district,” she said in her Facebook page after her filing.

“I want to ensure that every voice is heard, every family has the opportunity to thrive, and every student has access to quality education,” she added.

She appealed for everyone’s support, saying she “cannot do it alone”.

“I am once again asking for your trust, your support, and your partnership as we continue on this journey. Our collective effort is what brings about real, lasting change. Your participation, your vote, and your engagement are what will shape the future of our community,” Daphne said.

“In my first term, I pledged to serve with integrity, transparency, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of our district—and together, we have made significant progress,” she said.

As to her achievements, she said that she made possible the realization of “important projects and legislation that have directly impacted the lives of her constituents”.

“From advancing healthcare programs, improving infrastructure, empowering small businesses, and supporting education, I’ve worked hard to represent the values and aspirations of every citizen in this district. I am proud of these accomplishments, but I know that the work is not yet finished,” Daphne said.

“As your congresswoman, I will remain dedicated to fighting for policies that lift up every person in this district. I will continue to be your voice in Congress, pushing for progress, for fairness, and for justice. Together, we will build on the foundation we’ve laid and push forward for even greater progress,” she added.

Sonny and Daphne’s twin sons are also joining the political raise, with Larenz filing his COC for the 6th district Provincial Board (PB) seats, while Lorenz has set his eyes for the 3rd district PB seats.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my two sons (THE TWINS) as they embark on this incredible journey, running for board members of their respective districts. Their passion, dedication, and vision for positive change inspire me every day,” Daphne said.

“I believe in their leadership and their commitment to making a difference in our community. Join me in supporting them as they work to create a brighter future for us all,” she added.

Dason Patric, the eldest of her children, has filed his COC as Cordova town councilor, replacing his younger brother Larenz.

“Inahan ko nga nagtan-aw kaniya nga nagdako, dili lang sa edad, apan sa iyang karakter. Sa gamay pa lang siya, nakita na nako nga aduna siyay dakong kasingkasing alang sa uban. Kanunay siyang andam nga mutabang, muhatag og panahon, ug maminaw sa mga nanginahanglan. Kini nga kasingkasing nga nagpaabot og kausaban mao ang usa sa iyang mga kinaiya nga akong ipasigarbo,” said Daphne, in endorsing Patric, who is joining politics for the first time. (CEBU NEWS)
