MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos hailed Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo’s gold medal feat at the Paris Olympics, and expressed optimism that the prized athlete would bag more achievements.

“We’ve witnessed history as Carlos Yulo clinched the Philippines’ first gold medal in artistic gymnastics at the Paris 2024 Olympics. I am confident that it will not be the last,” Marcos said in a Facebook post Saturday night.

“Congratulations, Caloy! The entire country stands proud with  you!” he added.

First Lady Liza Marcos also congratulated Yulo in an Instagram post.

“Got goosebumps as Lupang Hinirang played at the arena! We are so proud of you!” she said.

According to the official website of the Paris 2024 Olympics, Yulo earned a score of 15.000 after he stuck his three-and-a-half twist dismount cold.

Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat won silver with a score of 14.966 while Great Britain’s Jake Jarman bagged bronze after scoring 14.933.

“I’m so overwhelmed. I’m feeling grateful for having this medal and for God. He protected me, as always,” Yulo was quoted by olympics.com as saying.

“He gave me the strength to get through this kind of performance and perform this well,” he added.

Yulo’s victory allowed him to give the Philippines its second Olympic gold medal.

In 2021, Hidilyn Diaz made history after winning the country’s first Olympic gold medal in 97 years during the women’s 55 kg weightlifting event in Tokyo.
