MANILA, Philippines — Over 90,000 seedlings were planted during a simultaneous tree-growing activity led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the commemoration of Arbor Day yesterday.

A total of 200 hectares in 205 sites were planted nationwide, with 1,543 volunteers joining the activity.

The DENR said the Project TRANSFORM initiative spanned five towns of Rizal – Tanay, Antipolo, Baras, San Mateo and Rodriguez – as part of global efforts to reverse global warming.

The department said this is a major step toward re-greening the country and promoting a healthy ecosystem.

Native tree seedlings were planted, including narra, apitong and molave, as well as fruit bearing trees such as guyabano.

Planting sites in Rizal covered the protected areas in the Kaliwa River Forest Reserve, Upper Marikina River Basin and Marikina River Watershed.

The DENR noted that these watersheds and forest reserves act as natural protection against soil erosion and flood, while also ensuring a steady stream of water supply for Metro Manila.

Arbor Day is observed every June 25, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 396, s. 2003.
