MANILA, Philippines — The leadership of opposition Liberal Party (LP) said it fully respects the decision of former vice president Leni Robredo not to seek a Senate seat in the 2025 elections.

Robredo, in an interview in Naga City on Friday, closed her doors on a Senate run, saying she prefers to run for mayor in next year’s polls.

“The Liberal Party stands behind former vice president Robredo and wishes her the very best in her future endeavors,” the party said in a statement.

“We wish her success, no matter which direction she takes. We will always look up to her, not just as an excellent leader, but as an inspiration in facing challenges and addressing the needs of our fellow citizens,” it added in Filipino.

Robredo served as LP chair from 2016 to 2022. She ran as an independent in the 2022 presidential elections, but remained a member of the party.

Although the former vice president said her preference is to run for Naga City mayor, she said she does not want to make a formal announcement yet until after she fulfills all her commitments and informed all concerned parties.

“I already asked LP and told them that I will not run for the Senate,” she said. “I told them that my preference is to run as mayor of Naga.”

“Before any announcement, I want to settle everything first. I have already asked for permission from LP and some members of the opposition. I haven’t asked for permission from Angat Buhay yet,” said the former vice president, referring to the non-government organization that she founded after her term.

“I’m still finishing my other obligations and speaking engagements. But the preparation is really to run as mayor of Naga,” she added.
