MANILA, Philippines — The country’s dominant political party, Lakas-CMD, which is headed by Speaker Martin Romualdez, will formally coalesce tomorrow with the party of his cousin, President Marcos, that was used in the May 2022 presidential elections.

“As the spokesperson of Lakas-CMD, we will be forging our alliance with Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) on Wednesday, and we look forward to establishing and building on this alliance,” House Deputy Speaker David Suarez announced during yesterday’s briefing at the House.

The second district congressman of Quezon province said Lakas-CMD, which has nearly a hundred members in the House of Representatives – the biggest power bloc in the chamber – said the ruling party “shares common values” with the party of the Chief Executive.

“We share common values; we share a lot of commonalities when it comes to ideology. Of course, we carry the President’s banner calling for unity, development and progress, and I think this should be the basis of unity for all the other political parties that want to align with PFP,” Suarez explained.

The House leader also mentioned that the May 2025 midterm polls are just around the corner.

“So, it is vital for us to see and forge these alliances not only in the national level, but also on the provincial and local levels as well. As we have seen when it comes to implementation of programs and projects, we need to see alignment also,” the senior administration lawmaker stressed.

“When it comes to support and when it comes to proper implementation and execution, so we do look forward to this alliance and I hope that the other political parties will follow soon,” Suarez said, expressing optimism about the prospects of a larger coalition for the 2025 elections.

Rep. Joel Chua of Manila’s third district – a member of the Aksyon Demokratiko party – described this as a “welcome development.” “The people have spoken and President Marcos is now our President who carries the banner of unity. So, we must unite for the sake of our country.”

Their colleague, Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur’s first district, noted that the “strength of democracy is really to form a coalition.”

“As far as I know, from the very start, our President started this even during his campaign back in 2022,” he said. “The President’s message has always been unity. As we always say, in unity there is strength. Unity in diversity doesn’t necessarily mean that since you have your own platform, your own advocacies, doesn’t mean that we can’t compromise.”
